Velociraptor, also known as the 'swift thief', is a genus that includes two known species of theropod dinosaurs. dromaeosaurids who lived towards the end of the period Cretaceous, about 75 to 71 million years ago, in the Campanian period, located in what is now Asia. For a long time, only one species has been identified, Velociraptor mongoliensis, whose fossils have been found in Central Asia, in Mongolia. However, in 2008 Velociraptor osmolskae, was named as the second species in 2008 thanks to the discovery of cranial material from Inner Mongolia, China.

Despite being smaller than other dromaeosaurids like Deinonychus and Achillobator, Velociraptor shared many anatomical features similar to those of other dromaeosaurids. It was a bipedal carnivore, with a long, stiff tail, distinctive feathers, and very large, sickle-shaped claws on each foot, which probably facilitated the execution of its prey. Unlike other dromaeosaurids, Velociraptor had a low, elongated skull and a short, upward-facing snout. It was characterized by its very long hind legs, reflecting (true to its name) its evident high speed.

For his legendary presence in the literary work of Michael Crichton Jurassic ParkVelociraptor, in the film its name is frequently shortened to "raptor" or "raptors," and its depiction is considerably larger.
